The State of Social – Twitter

Social Media Marketing and Twitter

In our last State of Social blog post featuring Facebook, we said that particular platform had endured a rough year. Twitter, on the other hand, has been in rough water again and again and again, for a few years now. Their CEO, Jack Dorsey, returned to the company in 2015, but his return has done little to right a ship that has, at times, lost the faith of its shareholders.

At any rate, Twitter retains a user base that is one of the most loyal, possibly the largest, of any platform currently in existence. The instant, direct nature of the user experience on Twitter makes it a prime platform for engaging with consumers and members. So, is Twitter worth your time in 2018?

Let’s take a look.

Gender, Age, and Location Demographics

Twitter is a universally popular platform for men and women alike. About 25 percent of women online use Twitter, while 24 percent of men online Tweet. The platform remains a hit with younger generations – 36 percent of 18-29-year-olds use the platform, versus just 23 percent of 30-49-year-olds and 21 percent of 50-64-year-olds, respectively.

Globally, Twitter is extremely popular. A vast majority of Twitter accounts (79 percent) are located outside of the U.S. For companies, this is either an opportunity or an issue. But, with targeting capabilities available through Twitter Ads, for example, keeping your messaging domestic isn’t difficult to do at all.

Our Take

For engaging consumers, your followers, few platforms allow for such direct communication as Twitter. Organizations or businesses with a large audience in the 18-48- year- old range are likely missing out on opportunities to engage, inform, and nurture relationships with their base by ignoring Twitter as an outlet for news, announcements, and other forms of content. As with any platform, being genuine and adding value should be your organization’s primary goal. Do it right and Twitter could be an incredibly valuable asset to your marketing and consumer engagement initiatives.
